Tears flow for Major Mahama at vigil in Accra

The Ghana Armed Forces and the EIB Network have held a vigil for the late Maxwell Mahama at the Burma Camp in Accra.The vigil precedes the burial of the late army officer who was brutally lynched at Denkyira Obuasi on Monday. The event was attended by the family of the late officer, top military and government officials and friends and well-wishers of the bereaved family.

Police say some women from whom the soldier had bought snails spotted his official pistol and raised an alarm that he was a robber.

The women, according to the police account of the killing, phoned William Baah, the assembly man in the area, and reported that they had seen a robber. The assembly man then organised the townfolk to lynch the captain.

Major Mahama’s killing has shocked the nation and sparked a relentless campaign against mob justice.
The police have arrested over 44 people in connection with the killing. The late soldier is set to be buried at the Osu Cemetary in Accra on Friday.
