Muhoozi Kainerugaba: The president of Uganda elevates his son to the rank of chief of staff

With his predecessor taking up the position of head of the trade ministry, he now leads the nation’s defense forces in lieu of Gen. Wilson Mbadi.

In the reshuffle, two of Gen. Kainerugaba’s closest advisors have also been chosen as ministers.

Concern has been raised by the response to Gen. Kainerugaba’s promotion.

The AFP news agency was informed by opposition MP Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda that President Museveni was handling Uganda as “a personal enterprise of his family.”

He denounced the appointment and stated that Ugandans must fight the “family dynasty.”

The opposition charged President Museveni, his son, and other officials with torture and kidnapping following the 2021 elections.

A spokesman for the president refuted these allegations and informed The New York Times that his opponents in politics were “peddling wrong information.”

In an X post that has since been removed, Gen. Kainerugaba said that he would run for president in the 2026 election.

Recently, he has been organizing support around the nation through demonstrations, a move that has received criticism from certain places.

Since enlisting in the army in 1999, his career has taken off. The local media has coined the term “Muhoozi Project” to describe his rise to prominence.
