Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko
President Nana Akufo-Addo has relieved the Energy Minister, Boakye Agyarko of his duties Monday, August 6.
In his place, Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, John Peter Amewu, will act temporarily as the energy minister, a statement under the signature of director of communications at the presidency Eugene Arhin, said.
Mr. Boakye has come under the spotlight for his involvement in the controversial renegotiated Ameri deal which seeks to alter the original $510 million deal procured by the erstwhile NDC government.
However, the proposed renegotiated deal presented to parliament as analysed by civil society groups including IMANI Ghana, Africa Center for Energy Policy(ACEP), Institute of Energy Security (IES) among others has been described as worse than the original deal.
In the ensuing controversy, reports emerged suggesting the President, Nana Akufo-Addo, was “misled” into giving an executive approval to the deal for which reason the deal is likely to be recalled from parliament.
Pressure has since been mounting on the president to sack the energy minister especially when Ameri issued a statement denying knowledge of the new agreement.
