James Gyakye Quayson, the Member of Parliament (MP)-elect for Assin North, is scheduled to be sworn in on Tuesday, July 4, 2023, at Parliament House. The ceremony will commence at 10:00 am.

Mr. Quayson emerged victorious in the recent bye-election held in Assin North, securing the seat for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) with a total of 17,245 valid votes cast in his favor.

His closest competitor, Charles Opoku of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), garnered 12,630 votes in the election.

The bye-election became necessary after Parliament officially requested the Electoral Commission (EC) to declare the Assin North seat vacant.

Prior to the bye-election, the Supreme Court of Ghana ruled that the EC had acted in violation of the constitution by allowing Mr. Quayson to contest the parliamentary election in 2020 without providing proof of renouncing his Canadian citizenship.

In accordance with the apex court’s ruling, Parliament was instructed to remove Mr. Quayson’s name from its records as a Member of Parliament.

The upcoming swearing-in ceremony will mark the official reinstatement of James Gyakye Quayson as the representative for Assin North in Parliament. It is a significant event that will reaffirm and the office.
