Former President John Dramani Mahama has expressed his regret over the death of Captain Maxwell Adams Mahama who was lynched and burnt in the Central Region by some angry youth on Monday morning.
John Mahama also expressed his condolences to the family of the deceased, who are heartbroken over the unfortunate development.
Capt. Maxwell Mahama, an officer of the 5 Infantry Battalion, was said to have been on his daily jogging routine on Monday when the unfortunate incident occurred.
Reports say he had his gun on him while jogging, and some residents who saw him with the gun raised alarm, attracting some of the youth in the community who attacked and killed him.
Citi News gathered that some armed robbers had attacked residents the day before, and the angry youth were on the lookout for the criminals, hence they mistook Captain Maxwell Mahama, who was dressed in civilian clothes as one of the perpetrators, having spotted a gun on him.
Subsequent reports suggest that the murder was linked to the soldier’s mission in the area to fight illegal small-scale mining.
But President John Mahama in a Twitter comment commiserated with the wife and children of the deceased.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Armed Forces has said it is collaborating with the various security agencies to unravel the circumstances under which the officer was murdered.
It has also called for calm among military personnel who may be incensed and wish to retaliate.
Meanwhile, some soldiers have reportedly stormed the town, where they have held a bout 80 men hostage. According to the DCE for the area, the soldiers have beaten some of the men. He said some women and children have also been detained in a church building.
