Asamponhene’s killing: Close confidant arrested

The late Otumfuo Asamponhene Nana Kwadwo Afoduo

A man identified as a close confidant of the Otumfuo’s Asamponhene, Nana Kwadwo Afoduo who was killed on Sunday has been arrested.

His arrest comes barely less than 24-hours after the 46-year-old direct relative of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II was murdered in what police suspect to be contract killing.

Though police are tight-lipped on details of the man who is currently in police custody, Joy News sources at the headquarters of the Ashanti Regional Police Command say the “man knows a lot about the late chief”.

It is not clear if this ‘confidant’ was with the late chief before or during his killing but is expected to assist police in their investigations.

Nana Kwadwo Foduo’s body was found at the backseat of his Toyota Land Cruiser vehicle at Ebuom on the Ejura-Nkoranza Highway on Sunday evening with multiple stab wounds.

But for some church members who were returning from a convention, the body of the 46-year-old would have been burnt beyond recognition.

With the help of other motorists, the church members managed to extinguish the fire and raised an alarm before the police got to the scene.

Public Relations Officer of the Ashanti regional police command, ASP Godwin Ahianyoh confirmed the murder to Joy news.

“It is true the police command is investigating the murder of Nana Kwadwo Foduo, 46-year old who is Otumfuo’s Asamponhene. His body was found in his vehicle on Sunday 18th August 2019 at about 4:30 p.m near Ebuom on the Ejura-Nkoranza Highway.”

It is not clear if police are treating the man whose name is been withheld as a key suspect.

It comes as police with the support of other sister-security agencies mounted a search for the killers of the late chief.

Meanwhile, the Ashanti Regional Police Command is scheduled to address a press conference on Monday.

The body of the late Asamponhene has deposited at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital’s morgue.
