Stellantis recalls nearly 200,000 cars due to problems with the stability control system.

According to the manufacturer, the problem is caused by a malfunctioning anti-lock-breaking mechanism, which deactivates the stability control system. In many cars, the system is a vital safety element that keeps the driver from losing control of the vehicle in an emergency—such as on flooded or snowy roads—by preventing them from losing steering capability.

Utilizing a car with a deactivated stability system may make collisions more likely, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration warned on Thursday. Electronic stability control systems have been shown in numerous studies to generally lower the number of fatal collisions, especially rollovers and single-vehicle incidents.

The NHTSA has required ESC systems to be included in all new passenger automobiles starting in 2012.

The 2022 Dodge Durango and the 2022 Ram 2500 and 3500 are the vehicles that are being recalled. With almost 158,000 pickups recalled, the Ram 2500 is the most affected model. The recall involves 524 Ram 3500s and just over 53,000 Durangos.

Stellantis stated that it will start contacting owners of impacted vehicles in late July. Customers can bring their cars to the dealers to have the anti-lock brake systems upgraded for free, according to the business.
