ghOver 1000 residents displaced as 53 houses collapse in Kwahu West

About one thousand-two hundred (1,200) residents at Asuboni Rails in the Eastern region have been displaced by devastating floods that submerged parts of the community Saturday.

At least Fifty-three (53) houses collapsed while hundred and four (104) others were flooded. Shops also got submerged.

Properties including personal effects, household items, stored food such as Maize worth millions of cedis have been destroyed.

No human casualty was recorded but some livestock reportedly died.

Preliminary investigation by the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO ) points to overflow of two rivers – River Nkawkaw and River Akrawuso .

The affected residents were sheltered at the church of Pentecost building According to the residents, the last time such flood disaster occurred in the community was some nine years ago.

The Eastern Regional Minster Eric Kwakye Darfuor who doubles as Member of Parliament for Nkawkaw led a team made up of the District Chief Executive and others to the area.

According to the District’s Director of Operation for NADMO, Kwasi Dankwah,the displaced residents were temporarily sheltered in a Church of Pentecost building.

“Following the heavy downpour yesterday 5th October 2019, many households in kwahu west municipality namely Asuboni rail, Abrodiem, Atta Ne Atta, Ataaso have been flooded. In addition to this, many households in Asuboni rails had broken down. Items destroyed were mattresses, rice, maize household appliances such TV, radio computer and etc.”

He added: “the Regional minister, MCE and other collaborated agencies such as the national fire service, police service were all present. We arranged the Church of Pentecost at Asuboni rails as temporary place for displaced persons. We don’t have relief items so we are waiting for region and National to intervene”.

Heavy downpour recorded in parts of the region since October 4,2019 has similarly caused flooding in other districts municipalities such as Abuakwa North, Atiwa East and Birim Central. A Mother and Son escaped death when their room suddenly collapsed at midnight at Akyem Osiem.

The Abuakwa North NADMO office reports that “the rain which started yesterday at around 4:20 pm in the evening and stopped at 6:00pm today – 5/10/19 has resulted in building collapse and flooding in some part of the municipality. At Osiem, a collapsed building which occurred at exactly 11pm midnight nearly killed a woman and her 9 year old son who were sleeping at that time “.

In Atiwa East District, a river known as River Sea lying between Awosoase and Abenaaso communities overflow it banks and submerged portions of the road which made it impossible for vehicles and residents to cross.

Meanwhile, the Eastern Regional Director of NADMO, Kwame Appiah Kodua says assessments of the incidents are ongoing in earnest to facilitate supply of relief items to the victims .
