Legon Cities of the Ghana Premier League are now in grief following the passing of Sylvester Sackey, their goalie.
The 26-year-old, who spent the whole 2022–2023 season as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper, passed away on Tuesday, September 12, 2023, after a brief illness.
The goalkeeper’s death was verified by a statement from Legon Cities, which described it as a major setback.
The team said on Twitter (X): “It is with a heavy heart that we unfortunately announce the passing of our goalie, Sylvester Sackey.
“Sackey has been with us for the last four seasons and, for a large portion of the last two seasons, was our first-choice goalkeeper.
“His passing is a serious shock to all club members. Our thoughts and emotions are with the bereaved family during this extremely trying time. The club is in contact with Sylvester’s family and will explain our future steps in the coming days. Sackey, RIP.
Hearts of Oak, a dominant force in the Ghana Premier League, also sent a social media message of sympathy to Legon Cities and the deceased’s family.
