Major Mahama was killed while jogging last week Monday by locals at Denkyira Obuasi after they mistook him for a robber.
Police say some women from whom the soldier had bought snails spotted his official pistol and raised an alarm that he was a robber.
The women, according to the police account of the killing, phoned William Baah, the assembly man in the area, and reported that they had seen a robber. The assembly man then organised the townfolk to lynch the captain.
