Supporters of the NDC and NPP argue on social media about Mahama’s approval for Airbus.

After John Dramani Mahama was cleared by the Special Prosecutor of all wrongdoing in the Airbus controversy, followers of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) reacted to this news differently on social media, attacking one another.

Speaking at a news conference on Thursday, August 8, 2024, Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng hinted that the scandal was created to damage former President John Dramani Mahama’s reputation, pointing out that the crisis was sparked by his name.

According to Kissi Agyebeng, his office’s investigation into the scandal revealed no proof of John Mahama’s malfeasance, and the only person with any relation to the arrangement is his brother Samuel Adam Mahama, who was named as Intermediary 5 in the controversy.

“There is no proof that former President Mahama was involved in the acquisition or upkeep of the agency relationship between Airbus and Foster and his associates regarding the Government of Ghana’s purchase of military transport aircraft from Airbus, according to the OSP investigation. Additionally, the OSP believes that the direct conversations and discussions that took place between former President Mahama and Airbus representatives in order to finalize the agreement were motivated by the latter’s good intentions.

“The OSP found no evidence that suggests that the involvement of Foster as an intermediary of Airbus and the direct communications and meetings between former President Mahama and officials of Airbus to close the deal between Airbus and the Government of Ghana amounted to any corruption and corruption-related offence in respect of which the OSP has a mandate,” according to him.

Social media users’ reactions to the Special Prosecutor’s findings have been mixed, and it is clear from their tweets which political parties they support.

While NDC supporters declare victory and validation for John Mahama and the NDC, NPP members think he was crooked and that the OSP did not conduct a thorough investigation.
