President John Dramani Mahama has received a severe warning from Salamatu Braimah, the National Chairperson of the Teachers and Education Workers’ Union (TEWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC).

Her statements followed assertions that the government considers their role—and hence, their complaints—to be inconsequential.

Braimah made it plain that until significant talks with the president are held and their issues are addressed, TEWU will not resume work or end their strike.

Braimah questioned the administration’s regard for educators and educators in her statement. According to her, the government should pay the union so that they would quit if the president genuinely thinks that TEWU’s position is unimportant. Teachers who feel disregarded and excluded from crucial decision-making processes are extremely frustrated, as this incisive expression highlights.

Teachers and the education workforce are not ready to take a backseat, Braimah underlined. Direct engagement is what the union is calling for. She was clear: unless their demands are taken seriously, there will be no return to the classroom.

When it seems like there are no more avenues for communication, striking is the only remaining tactic for her. According to TEWU, rejecting their requests is equivalent to downplaying the role that educators have in determining the future of the nation.

The impasse is a reflection of larger conflicts over pay, recognition, and working conditions between the government and the school sector.

According to Braimah, respect for the job of teachers must appear in deeds as well as words. The union is urging the president to show its appreciation for education workers in both policy and practice. If not, she said, the strike will go on.
