A medical Doctor at the St. Thresea’s Hospital in Nandom, Dr. Aduwia David Adobasom, has advised senior citizens to regularly undergo medical checks. Dr. Aduwia said ageing is a natural phenomenon meant for everyone.
Dr. Aduwia gave the advice at a health talk organized by the Nandom District Assembly for the elderly to celebrate the Senior Citizens and their contribution to the development of Nandom District in particular and the country as a whole.
He observed that: “As we age, our vulnerability increases and our vitality decreases. As a result, you cannot do what you used to do as you anymore.”
Dr. Aduwia said, the heart gets weaker with time as one ages. He added, ‘as the heart gets weak in pumping blood, the blood vessels also hardens up.’
He explained that this sometimes results in hypertension and other heart related ailments in old people.
Dr. Aduwia drummed home the need for the aged to exercise regularly, eat healthy food and avoid smoking and excessive alcohol intake.
The District Chief Executive for Nandom, Thaddeus Arkum Aasoglenang, said the aged are a blessing to society.
He said society depends on the experience, knowledge and guidance of the elderly for further socio-economic advancement.
Mr. Aasoglenang said Nandom District Assembly is particularly excited to host the Senior Citizens of the District annually as a token appreciation for their sacrifices for the country.
He said government in the last two years has introduced several pro poor policies for the benefit of Ghanaians. Mr. Aasoglenang pointed out that retirement is not a sign of tiredness and urged all Senior Citizens to take advantage of the interventions and “activate themselves”.
