A peaceful registration exercise at Kasoa Akweley in the Central region Sunday turned violent with reports of gunshots fired at the centre.
Members of the two leading political parties, National Democratic Congress (NDC) and New Patriotic Party (NPP), have engaged in accusations and counter accusations over the incident.
Former Constituency Secretary of the NDC, Andrew Donkor on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem accused the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Michael Essuman Mensah and NPP Constituency Youth Organiser, Nana 1 of masterminding the attack.
He claimed activists of the NPP wielding guns stormed the registration centre and fired warning shots just to scare people.
The reason for the misunderstanding, Mr Donkor explained is their decision not to allow names of those still in the queue after 5: pm to be written to enable them register the next day.
“NDC suggested on Saturday that the names of those who had queued but could not register be written to enable them register the next day; NPP kicked against it so we did not understand why the registration officer agreed to their preposition,” he stated.
Instead of settling the case amicably, Mr Donkor said the NPP chose to be violent which marred the process.
In a rebuttal, the MCE vehemently denied the allegation.
“I quickly rushed to the registration centre at Akweley when I heard the news. But, I’m not surprised because it is our stronghold and the NDC just wants to create confusion to discourage people from registering,” he said in Twi.
Mr Mensah assured that the registration process in all centres in the municipality would be peaceful.
