Buhari left Nigeria on January 19 on what was supposed to be a 10-day medical leave, but has since postponed his return date twice, as his condition deteriorates.
According to a report by Saharareporters.com, Buhari’s condition has been downgraded to “full blown illness” even by members of his kitchen cabinet who are now quietly admitting that he is “ill.”
The report said the Nigerian president’s deteriorating health has got to a point where doctors are taking “extreme measures” to ensure that he eats.
He is also reported to have lost weight due to his illness and course of treatment.
With Buhari facing pressure at home to speak to the Nigerian people, some of his aides are said to be pressuring him to return home for brief period to create the impression that he is physically fit.
However, the doctors have rejected the idea, warning that his condition would certainly deteriorate should he return to Nigeria without completing his treatment.
“I understand that the doctors [in the UK] have made it clear that Mr. President’s flight back to Nigeria could complicate things for him,” the report quoted a source as saying.
For many Nigerians, the situation with Buhari brings back memories of former President Musa Yar’a dua who died in office after falling sick abroad for a long time.
