The Ghana Police Service has made a significant breakthrough in the murder case of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale, arresting a key suspect identified as Daniel Owusu Koranteng, also known as Akwasi Amakye.
Amakye, a former colleague of Suale at Tiger Eye Private Investigations, is accused of betraying Suale by leaking his photographs to a prominent Ghanaian politician before his assassination.
Suale’s murder occurred on January 16, 2019, near his family home in Madina, after he collaborated with the BBC on an investigative report exposing widespread corruption in African football, particularly in Ghana ¹. Amakye was dismissed from Tiger Eye Private Investigations before the incident and fled Ghana immediately after authorities began linking him to the case.
The FBI’s involvement in the investigation has been crucial, uncovering phone records and other key evidence suggesting Amakye’s involvement. The FBI’s analysis includes phone conversations between Amakye and Suale in the days leading up to the murder. Suale’s mobile phones were sent to the U.S. for forensic examination as part of the ongoing investigation.
A source within the police Criminal Investigations Department (CID) revealed that Amakye frequently visited Suale at his residence in Madina but relocated to the United States upon sensing police were closing in on him. Authorities say he secretly returned to Ghana last week, leading to his arrest at a hair-plaiting salon in Amasaman-Adease.
However, the arrest has sparked controversy within the police service, as a senior officer is reportedly attempting to interfere with the investigation. The officer is advocating for Amakye to be granted police inquiry bail rather than being immediately arraigned before court, creating tension at the police headquarters.
The investigation into Suale’s murder is ongoing, and the police are working to ensure justice is served. The arrest of Amakye is a significant step forward in the case, and the police are committed to uncovering the truth behind Suale’s tragic death
