He is the second nominee of the day and the fourth overall after three others were not able to secure enough support from their peers.

Following three rounds of voting late on Tuesday, Mr. Johnson was chosen.

Since Kevin McCarthy was removed from office on October 3, the House has been without a Speaker and has not been able to approve legislation.

The nominee, Mr. Johnson, 51, of Louisiana, was revealed by Elise Stefanik, chairwoman of the House Republican Conference.

In the lower house of Congress, Republicans have a slim majority over Democrats, thus their nominee can win with just a few votes away from the opposition.

Hours after Majority Whip Tom Emmer, the previous nominee, withdrew due to insufficient support, Mr. Johnson was nominated.

It’s still unclear if Mr. Johnson will receive the 217 votes necessary for a simple majority in the House and the gavel.

Earlier on Tuesday, after former President Donald Trump publicly criticized him, Mr. Johnson lost the vote to Mr. Emmer, and the representative from Minnesota withdrew.

In the last voting round, Congressman Byron Donald garnered 29 votes, while Mr. Johnson received 128, according to Ms. Stefanik.

The House might vote on Mr. Johnson’s nomination in its entirety as early as this Wednesday afternoon. Republicans will have to start over if he doesn’t succeed.

Congressman Mike Gallagher of Wisconsin told Politico that he doesn’t think Mr. Johnson could garner enough support in the House.
