The spokesperson for Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, often known as NAPO, the vice presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has defended him in the wake of a widely shared video purporting to show him endorsing John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
In the video, NAPO unintentionally encouraged supporters to support Mahama over Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP’s presidential candidate, while speaking to supporters during a campaign rally in the Greater Accra area.
“You didn’t let me finish, so when you cast your ballot, please vote for John Mahama and Robert, John Mahama and Robert, eii Bawumia and Robert. He said, “I mean Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Robert,” which caused the audience to giggle, but he soon corrected himself.
The opposition NDC in particular has criticized and ridiculed the episode. Fiifi Boafo, the spokeswoman for NAPO, has refuted allegations that the comment was deliberate, characterizing it as a normal lapse that might happen during extended public appearances.
“Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh is a human, and people make mistakes. According to graphiconline.com, Dr. Opoku Prempeh stated in an interview with Starr FM that he would never choose John Dramani Mahama over Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
He emphasized that Dr. Bawumia’s comments and deeds demonstrate NAPO’s well-documented support for him.
Boafo went on to explain that NAPO purposefully uses Mahama in their campaign speeches to remind voters—especially young people—of the NDC leader’s track record in government.
It is necessary for Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh to discuss John Mahama. The rationale is that an election is approaching. He pointed out that the 18-year-olds casting their first ballots today were just 10 years old when John Mahama stepped down as president.
Boafo claims that a large number of young voters may not be aware of problems like gasoline shortages, power outages, and revoked allowances that occurred under Mahama. “All he’s doing is reminding us of the risks and difficulties we had while John Mahama was president. However, this does not imply that he should be elected. That is a poor decision, and he [NAPO] will not suggest it.
In addition to saying that NAPO is still dedicated to supporting Dr. Bawumia’s candidacy and making sure the NPP wins the next elections, he urged detractors to see the episode as an honest error.
