Xenophobic Attacks: Ghanaians and their businesses are safe in SA – Ayorkor Botchwey

Foreign Affairs minister, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey has disclosed that that so far no Ghanaian has been caught up in the xenophobic attacks in South Africa.According to her, no Ghanaian living in the country has been affected by the current ongoing riots. There has been a growing concern in the diamond-rich nation, with citizens looting and destroying properties of foreign nationals. The perpetrators of the attacks claim foreigners have invaded their country and taken away their jobs, therefore the only way to get back what belonged to them was to sack those foreigners by force.Reports suggest that Nigerians have been hit the most by the xenophobic attacks in South Africa.

However, speaking on the floor of Parliament on Friday, Ghana’s Foreign Affairs minister Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey assured that Ghanaians living in South Africa have not been affected by the riots.
Our checks in the country indicated that no Ghanaian national or their businesses have been affected by the recent attacks. Our embassy in Pretoria and the foreign ministry will continue to monitor the situation and update the country appropriately,” she said.
She added that Ghanaians should remain calm and not engage themselves in the uproar.
