The rain had blocked the main railway to the eastern states and flooded highways, making the initial search for the family difficult. Tuesday saw the search put on hold by Western Australia Police. Goldfields-Esperance District Inspector Mick Kelly told WA Today that the aircraft search was called off in less than an hour.

However, the family was located shortly after the search could recommence on Wednesday after being spotted from the air. The group is shown in a photo standing next to one of the cars.

According to Western Australia Police, the family was being fed while they awaited their evacuation to Kalgoorlie-Boulder.

Roger Cooke, the premier, called it “a great outcome.”

“I just want to thank all the police, first responders, search parties, and everyone who participated in the efforts and operations to locate that family,” he stated to reporters on Thursday.

Their community’s members have likewise expressed relief.

“We thought they’d be okay because they’re really bush-savvy, so we didn’t think it would be quite so emotional,” Rhonda Thorncroft said to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. “But the road is quite dangerous right now, so we didn’t know where they were.
