The Divisional Chief of Nsuem in the Wassa Fiase Traditional Area Nana Kwamena Adade II is calling on president Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo Addo to as a matter of urgency lift the ban on illegal mining.
The frustrated chief in his welcome address to the Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwasi Amoako Atta indicated that, the ban has brought serious economic and social hardship on his people, and to a major extent the country.
Nana Kwamena Adade II cried that he is particularly unhappy how his subjects line up every morning at his palace, demanding monies for their daily bread due to the hardships the ban has brought on them.
“HERE IN NSUEM, OUR ONLY JOB IS MINING, WHEN I ASCENDED THE THRONE, I HAD SOME MONEY BUT WHEN THE BAN WAS PLACED ON THE ACTIVITY, I’VE SPENT ALL MY SAVINGS BECAUSE THERE IS NO OTHER JOB IN THIS TOWN. NOW I’M UNABLE TO SLEEP COMFORTABLY BECAUSE OF THE NUMEROUS DEMANDS FROM MY SUBJECTS EACH PASSING DAY. THIS WAS NOT THE CASE BEFORE THE BAN WAS PLACED”
According to him, his chiefs and elders have also suffered the consequence and as such been absenting themselves from traditional council meetings.
“WE ARE ONLY APPEALING TO YOU… THE BAN IS LONG OVERDUE, AND NOW SOME OF US (CHIEFS) CANNOT CONFIDENTLY EXPRESS OUR OPINIONS BECAUSE OF WHERE WE ARE COMING FROM. SOME OF US ARE SUFFERING, AND ROBBERY IS RISING NOW MY CHIEFS ARE UNABLE TO ATTEND COUNCIL MEETINGS BECAUSE OF HUNGER”
Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwasi Amoako Atta assured the chief and his people of drawing government’s attention to their plight.
