Ghanaians will celebrate 60 years of independence today [Monday], March 6, 2017. Ghana attained independence on March 6, 1957, from Britain after over 100 years of colonial rule. The celebration will be marked with the traditional march past and parade at the iconic Black Star Square.

A similar event will take place across the country in all 10 regional capitals. This year’s celebration is under the theme: “Mobilising for Ghana’s future.”
President Nana Akufo-Addo is expected to take the national salute and deliver a speech of solidarity and light the perpetual flame at the Black Star Square (Independence Square).
Also as part of the celebrations, school children and personnel of the security agencies will march at a colourful event at the Square in the presence of special guests – Presidents Robert Mugabe and Faure Gnassingbé of Zimbabwe and Togo respectively.
Ghana was the first Sub-Saharan African country to gain independence after struggles led by its first President Dr Kwame Nkrumah.
