“Safety is our highest priority,” Chief Executive Scott Kirby wrote in a message to the airline’s millions of passengers.

An engine on a jet caught fire earlier this month, and last week a panel from the aircraft’s body broke off in midair.

Mr. Kirby wrote, “United is reviewing what happened.”

According to Mr. Kirby, safety is the primary concern in “everything we do.” “I want you to know that these incidents have our attention and have sharpened our focus,” he wrote.

He stated that the corporation already had plans to enhance training for new maintenance technicians and pilots, as well as to provide more resources to the management of its supplier network.
