THe Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) has decided to ratify its amended constitution at its 1st Biennial Conference scheduled to take place at the Central Region of Ghana, Cape Coast, starting from today 12th of October 2018 to the 13th of the same month.
The aim of the amendment followed the last congress of the Union which resolved that the constitution be amended to allow for universal suffrage of the Union members.
Another significant aim of its amendment according to the committee is the reservation of the position of the second vice president to women, the creation of a position for National Youth Organiser and National Organiser to ensure the enhanced gender balance in the union.
Currently, most industry players and stake holders are really not happy about an amendment in the constitution which requires a member to be in good standing for 2 years before they are eligible to vote in the up coming elections. As compared to the former, the electoral system allows voters to rectify their status or voting documents ahead of vote so more people can express via the ballot. To this, they feel and believe its unfair and a smart way of the union leaders not to ensure democracy hence for their own selfish gain.
The conference is expected to among other things ratify the amended constitution of the union and discuss some policy issues among others. In addition, it will also review the roadmap for MUSIGA elections next year.
