Ibrahim Mahama’s troubles seem to have no end in sight as he has been dragged to court yet again. Engineers and Planners, a company owned by the estranged brother of the former president of Ghana, John Mahama was sued by the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT).
The suit by SSNIT, according to a report by Class FM, also drags the the company’s CEO and its Directors to court. According to other media reports, Engineers and Planners failed to pay pay social security contributions of its staff for a substantive period of time. According to the laws of Ghana, it is the employer’s responsibility to make sure that all employees are registered under the scheme and that regular contributions are made on behalf of the workers to SSNIT. And from indications, it would seem that Engineers and Planners failed to observe that obligation. A report by ModernGhana.com says, Ibrahim Mahama, Kwadwo Aboagye-Attah and Sidney Aubrey Steyn – CEO, Director and Managing Director of the company respectively – were not seen in court for the first sitting on on Saturday 29 April. Sulemana Ahmed Amidu, the executive director of Engineers and Planners was, however, present at the sitting to represent the company. He pleaded not guilty to the charges leveled against him and the company and was subsequently granted bail with the surety of GHS 10,000. The case by SSNIT says a check of the Engineers and Planners books show that from February 2015 to July 2015, June 2016 to August 2016, and in October 2016, the SSNIT contributions of employees, amounting to GHS 668,754.75, had not been paid. Overdue SSNIT contributions attract a fee, which was GHS 387,709.31 for Engineers and Planners bringing the total indebtedness of the accused to GHS1,056,464.06. The case has since been adjourned to May 13.
