After praising former president Nana Akufo-Addo in his 2020 hit tune, Happy Day, featuring former Lynx Entertainment signee Kuami Eugene, the CEO of the Sarkcess Music record label has received accusations in recent years of having ties to the main opposition party.

Many people interpreted rapper Sarkodie’s usage of the phrase “Nana Toaso” in the song as support for the former president, who used it throughout his 2020 general election campaign to run for a second term in government.

The accusations persisted after the rapper, who had been outspoken about the former John Dramani Mahama administration, kept silent on national matters under Nana Akufo-Addo.

Sarkodie discusses his purported NPP allegiance.

Sarkodie spoke as a guest speaker at the Kumasi Rising Music, Media, and Tourism Dialogue on Thursday, September 25, 2025, at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology’s (KNUST) IDL Conference Hall.

The rapper, who is getting up for his much-anticipated impending Rapperholic Homecoming show, denied any affiliation with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in an interview with media personality Serwaa Amihere.

Sarkodie said that he had not accepted any funding to campaign for the major opposition party and that he did not know any of its officials.

He stated:

“Am I associated with the NPP? None of the party members are people I know. They have not paid me, but they keep insisting that I wrote a song for them. I still stand by what I stated about our former president in a verse.

The BET Award winner claimed that during his time in office, he exclusively backed the free education agenda of the New Patriotic Party and former President Nana Akufo-Addo.

Sarkodie added that he has never had the chance to speak with political figures about the entertainment sector in Ghana.

He stated:

“I supported the Free Education policy wholeheartedly. I will commend it, and I remain in favour of it. I will stand by it whether you criticise me or not. I have not got the chance to sit with influential people.”

On September 24, 2025, Sarkodie joined HRM Sariki Abass Giwa, Star Zed, Angel Town, Asafo Powers, and his team on a float through the streets of Kumasi as part of his last preparations for the Rapperholic Homecoming performance.

Ghanaians retaliate against Sarkodie for failing to criticise Akufo-Addo as he did John Mahama.

The rapper and his crew received a raucous response from countless people, who joined the walk to promote the impending Rapperholic Homecoming performance.

Following the event’s successful conclusion, Sarkodie gave some cash to the supporters as a token of gratitude for their enormous participation for the peace walk.

Blogger Vimbuzz TV posted a video of the BET award-winning rapper leaving in an opulent Toyota Land Cruiser, showering the admirers with cash.

In addition, Sarkodie’s manager, Angel Town, and other members of his entourage hurled stacks of five Ghana cedi notes towards the supporters, who scrambled to retrieve them from the ground.
