Police in Brong Ahafo Region have arrested two persons who were part of a gang that robbed a gold dealer at gunpoint.
The robbers stole about GH¢50,000 from the gold dealer, Sumaila Ibrahim. Wenchi Divisional Police Commander, ACP Peter Gyimah, said the robbers threatened to kill the gold dealer if he refused to hand over the money.
Sumaila Ibrahim is said to have boarded the cab that was being driven by 27-year-old Yaw Isaac from Wenchi heading to Banda Nkwanta a mining community in the Boie – Bamboi District of the Northern Region.
However, halfway through the journey, at Subinso II and Branam on the Wenchi-Wa Highway, the driver who knew the victim was carrying money stopped the car. Immediately, two gun-wielding men – one of whom has been identified as 32-year-old Asante Maxwell – attacked Sumaila and took away the money.
Shortly after the attack, the Yaw Isaac drove to the police station apparently to enable Sumaila lodge a complaint.
But ACP Gyimah said during interrogation, Yaw Isaac confessed that he masterminded the robbery.
“He led us to the house of his friend Maxwell Asante but immediately he saw us, he bolted and we have mounted a manhunt for him” said ACP Gyimah.
The Wenchi Divisional Police Commander revealed after a thorough search of Maxwell Asante’s room, they have retrieved GH¢43,000.
The other member of the gang who bolted has been identified only as Buster.
