The successful implementation of NPP’s free SHS policy seems not to be only beneficial to parents of first year students but also a cross section of prostitutes in the central business district of Accra.
YEN.com.gh has interacted with some of such casual call girls at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle who all say they have reduced the prices of services due to the policy. ” I have three children and school fees takes most of my money. Before this free SHS thing I charge a lot but now I have reduced my price,” one such prostitute revealed. Speaking to another such rent girl who wants to be called “Afia”, she revealed her intention of reducing her charges by 10 cedis. Meanwhile the free SHS policy is expected to see over 400,000 students get admited to various senior high schools without having to pay tuition fees. The utterances from these female sex-workers also come in the wake of various arrests conducted against them by the police. Prostitution currently remains illegal in Ghana with various workers in the profession liable to jail sentences once caught by the police.
In the meantime, the Ghana AIDS Commission has also revealed that casual sex-workers remain one of the most vulnerable persons who have the highest risk of contracting STDs and STIs.
