The 49-year-old’s ascension coincides with the dismissal of five ministers as part of a significant cabinet reorganization.

Mr. Museveni, who has been in office since 1986, has refuted rumors that he is preparing his only son to succeed him.

A controversial figure, Gen. Kainerugaba, has been breaking military rules by getting more and more involved in politics.

Following his threats to invade neighboring Kenya on Twitter, where he went by the handle X, his father fired him in 2022 from his position as head of the army’s land troops.

In addition, President Museveni apologized to the president of Kenya and begged for “forgiveness” on behalf of his son.

The offensive tweet, however, was never taken down by Gen. Kainerugaba, who was elevated to the rank of general and kept his position as his father’s advisor.

In a contentious follow-up post, he declared he would send troops to Moscow to support President Vladimir Putin in defending Russia against Ukraine.
