Assin Central MP, Kennedy Ohene Agyepong has charged NPP delegates to reject all aspirants who try to campaign with the name of President Akufo Addo ahead of the party’s National Delegates Congress in June.
The law maker and businessman has indicated that looking at the transparency and fairness that characterized the election of party officers at all levels, the party is currently led by the best of officers in the various constituencies and he was confident these officers will elect the most suitable people to run the affairs of the party at the National Level.
He asked that the delegates be allowed the free will to elect national officers since any attempt to impose candidates will not inure to the greater good of the party.
He believes the party needs bold and independent national officers who can take firm decisions and be frank with the Government at any point in time.
He indicated candidates who campaign with the President’s name would not have the free will to operate and may always be tempted to do the bidding of a particular group.
Kennedy Agyepong’s call is coming in the wake of widespread rumors that certain aspirants for for National Positions are being persuaded to back down. Sources says party stalwarts is mounting pressure on certain candidates, particularly those in the National Chairman race to step down.
It is believed that in the coming days more of these aspirants would be coming under intense pressure to step down from contesting various positions.
Political analysts say the NPP will be creating serious problems should there be the slightest indication of party stalwart meddling in the internal elections of the party.
They say, President Akufo has shot to iconic status in the NPP and the caliber of people elected to National Executive positions would have little impact on his political future.
They however warn that the President risks leading a seriously fractured party should he be seen taking sides in the impending National executive elections.
