Assin Central lawmaker, Ken Agyapong, did not assault any police officer for which he should be arrested, Alexander Afenyo–Markin, the Member of Parliament for the Effutu Constituency, has said.

The police administration has requested parliament to release Mr Agyapong to the law enforcement body to assist them with investigations into a case of assault lodged against him.

The 19 March 2019 request to the Speaker of Parliament said a police officer, Detective Sergeant George Ofori, had reported an alleged assault on him by Mr Agyapong.

“The said incident is alleged to have occurred on 14 March 2019, during a demonstration by students of the University of Education, Winneba,” the letter signed by the Director-General/Administration, Commissioner of Police (COP), Mr Ken Yeboah, said.

It explained that the police administration was mindful of the privileges and immunities of Members of Parliament under the 1992 Constitution as well as the Standing Orders of Parliament.

“In the circumstances, we respectfully crave your indulgence to release Hon. Kennedy Agyapong to report to the Central Regional Police Commander to assist with investigations into the alleged assault,” it stated.

But speaking to members of the parliamentary press corps, Mr Afenyo-Markin, who is also a private legal practitioner, rebutted the allegation.

“The Police must properly evaluate the facts made available to them.”

“I just want to put on record that there was no such assault on any police officer in my presence,” he said.
