New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong is already sending signals to appointees serving in various government positions to be ready to join the campaign in the 2020 elections.
There are agitations among some party functionaries about the loyalty of some government appointees, their argument being that some of these persons either are not true party persons or shied away from the campaign and only surfaced when victory had been secured.
The open demonstration against some municipal and district chief executives by activists was an example of these agitations. They claimed some of them did not campaign for the party but had been rewarded “juicy” positions.
Professor Ken Attafuah , a criminologist, was appointed by the President as Acting Executive Secretary of the National Identification Authority, NIA. But allegations that he has awarded a contract worth $150 million to Margins Group has incurred the displeasure of Mr. Agyepong, who questioned the rationale behind the decision, especially when that deal could have been lower.
It must be pointed out that this is not the first time Mr. Agyepong had made a similar claim. In March this year, he made the similar allegations which the NIA refuted in a press statement.
“We would like to indicate that no such contract has been awarded to any entity by the NIA nor by its Executive Secretary. The Government, through the Office of the Vice-President, has set up four committees (Technical, Legal, Financial and Oversight) to advice on how to revive the National Identification Authority in order to achieve an effective National Identification System (NIS) within one year”, it said in a statement.
