Floods kill 11 children in Ashanti region

Eleven children have lost their lives to floods in the Ashanti Region within a month-and-a-half, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has said.

The Regional Director of NADMO, Mr Kwabena Nsenkyire who made the disclosure on Monday, 28 October 2019 said the latest casualty was a nine-year-old boy, whose body was retrieved on Sunday at Abuakwa.

Speaking in an interview with the media, he said all the children who have lost their lives in different floods were under 10 years.

Mr Nsenkyire said NADMO has started sensitising the residents in the region on flood-related issues.

He indicated that pupils in the area will be taught how to swim to prevent being swept away by floods.

“For almost one-and-a-half month now, children under 10 years have been swept away by rains. There are 11 of them now, this is very alarming,” he bemoaned.

He, therefore, charged the media to intensify education on floods and entreated teachers in the area to desist from sending the children home when it threatens to rain.

He admonished school heads to ensure the safety the pupils and invite the parents or guardians through phone calls during heavy rains to come and accompany their wards home. He said under no circumstance should pupils be left unattended to during heavy rains.
