ASU Backs Manhyia North MP’s Call On The Review of Height Requirement Into Security Services

Press Release
17/01/2019

ASU BACKS THE CALL TO REVIEW THE HEIGHT REQUIREMENT FOR SECURITY SERVICES.

The national president of Asante Student Union (ASU), Nana Kwame Donkor has backed the call to review height requirement during enlistment into security services in the country.

The call to review height requirement during enlistment into security services by Hon. Collins Owusu Amankwaah, the vice chairman for Defense and Interior Committee of parliament has received critical attention of the students group, Asante Students Union, stating that, it is unfair to use height as a means for disqualification in this day where intelligence gathering is more of brain and technology than physical strength.

He made this request when he was speaking to the press on the road map of ASU’s 40th anniversary.

“As we are about to celebrate our 40th anniversary as students group that champions the welfare of Asante indigenes, it is better we look into the future as some things are not right in this technological age. It is a common knowledge, that, naturally, Asantes are short, therefore the use of height as basis for qualification, is discriminatory and highly biased. We have been treated unfairly for so long and I think, that requirement should be reviewed.

Modern day security is about intelligence gathering, purposeful use of technology and the brain. Why do we have to disqualify some people because they are short? Are they not Ghanaians? He quizzed.

He pleaded with the commander in chief of Ghana Armed Forces and President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Akuffo Addo to have a critical look at this requirement which is depriving a section of Ghanaians their constitutional right.

He further reiterated that, a petition would be sent to Otumfour Osei Tutu II (King of Asante), office of the President, the Interior and Defense ministries, Parliamentary select committee on defense and interior, to have a critical look at height requirement of the security service in the country.
