Professor Mike Oquaye, the speaker of parliament has called for a complete amendment of Ghana’s laws to ban homosexuality and make it illegal.
According to Prof. Oquaye, who is also a pastor, homosexuality is a despicable act that is against Ghana’s culture and must not be accepted.
The speaker of parliament said this during a courtesy call by a delegation from Royal House Chapel led by its founder, Rev. Sam Korankye Ankrah, stating that the laws on homosexuality were not quite clear.
“It is unfortunate that people have become so liberal that they will want to liberalise Christianity…even priests are approving of homosexuality and allowing a man and a man [to] marry, a woman and a woman [to] marry and these are manifest abominations,” Prof. Oquaye stated.
He further said, “I trust that with your kind of insistence, the Parliament of Ghana…will find its way clear in strengthening the laws to ban homosexuality as they exist. As for this, may God forbid that it becomes a Ghanaian culture.”
While Ghana has no definitive laws on homosexuality, persons caught engaging in same-sex intimate relations are usually subjected to mob justice.
The sexual orientation is also frowned upon in many African countries, with some placing imprisonment of up to 15 years as punishment.
Only 10 African countries have decriminalized, or do not have laws banning homosexuality.
