Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader, is accused of insulting Jerry Ahmed Shaib, the Weija-Gbawe MP, during a heated vetting session on January 30, 2025. According to Bernard Ahiafor, Chairman of Parliament’s Appointments Committee, Afenyo-Markin called Shaib “silly” and told him he wasn’t doing his job properly.
This allegation has added to the tensions in Parliament, which have been running high since the chaotic scenes during the vetting process. The disturbances led to the suspension of four MPs, including Shaib, by Speaker Alban Bagbin.
Ahiafor also addressed concerns about the Appointments Committee’s decision to continue vetting President Mahama’s ministerial nominees despite the Minority’s boycott. He explained that the committee had a quorum, allowing them to proceed with their work lawfully. Ahiafor claimed that the Minority’s walkout was due to misinformation from Minority Chief Whip Habib Iddrisu, who allegedly said that Speaker Bagbin had halted the committee’s activities ¹.
The Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, however, stated that the Speaker had only postponed the meeting to February 3 and that the committee could continue its work. This development highlights the deepening divisions within Parliament and the challenges facing the vetting process.
