The National Organizer of the ruling New Patriotic Party, Sammi Awuku has condemned attempts by some ruling party big wig to disown vigilante groups aligned to the party, warning that as a former National Youth Organizer, he remembers them as the groups who stood by the party and fought for victory when law and order broke down under the erstwhile John Mahama administration.
In an appearance on Joy News Analysis Program Newsfile monitored by MyNewsGh. com, Sammi Awuku said he has been engaging some these groups to try and listen to their concerns of neglect as-as National Organizer, he knows the party still needs them for the next election.
Sammi Awuku recalled that under the NDC, the NPP party office was invaded by hooligans allegedly aligned to the NDC with National security accreditation which turned out fake. Sammi Awuku revealed that the incident prompted the NPP to defend themselves with the Invisible, Delta Forces groups, warning that he will resist any attempt to disown them.
Proferring a solution
Mr. Awuku said, however, said there is the need to refocus the energy of the groups to be a positive influence on the party and the government instead of the bad press.
He said most of the Delta, Invisible forces have skills as electricians, steel benders, masons, plumbers, and some form of skills that can make employable partners in government contracts so that they can receive some good pay and take care of themselves and their families.
“We have been trying to transform the Delta Forces and other groups to be a positive influence on the party and the government,” he said.
“I have been engaging them to understand their problems. As National Organizer, I need them to prosecute 2020 and won’t allow anyone to disown them. It will be disingenuous for me to say I don’t know them.” Sammi Awuku explained.
He traced the genesis of the vigilante groups from the Nkrumah and said it was not a phenomenon that began in 2017 but if it must be addressed, it must begin from the roots.
