The late Asantehemaa’s biography

On February 6, 2017, the late Nana Konadu Yiadom III, also known as Asantehemaa, was crowned the Ashanti Kingdom’s fourteenth Queen Mother.

In 2016, at the age of 109, she succeeded her mother, Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II, who ruled for 39 years.

During the Asante Confederacy’s restoration in 1927, she was born in Benyaade Shrine in Merdan, a little village near Kwadaso, Kumasi.

Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s eldest sister, Nana Konadu Yiadom III, also called Nana Panin, was born to Nana Afia Kobi and Opanin Kofi Fofie.

Despite other qualified relatives, she was selected as the traditional successor following the death of her mother.

Her aunt reared the Asantehemaa in Kumasi. Despite having no official education, she obtained extensive informal training that gave her the knowledge equivalent to a conventional education.

Nana Konadu Yiadom III, a Saviour Church member, married Kwame Boateng, a blacksmith.

In her capacity as Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III counsels the Asantehene, upholds Ashanti customs, and advocates for women’s rights, healthcare, and education.

In order to settle disputes related to culture and religion, she also convenes court twice a week.

The Asantehemaa is traditionally considered the Otumfuo’s mother.
