W/R: Five die after house collapsed on them during downpour

Five persons from the same family have been killed after a house collapsed on them as a result of torrential rainfall on Friday night at Ngyerisia, near Sekondi in the Western Region.

Confirming the incident to Citi News, the Sekondi-Takoradi Metro Director of NADMO, James Obeng said it happened between 8 and 9 pm after the house they lived in collapsed on them during the rainfall.

“I RECEIVED A CALL FROM THE ASSEMBLYMAN FROM THE TOWN. SO WHEN WE GOT THERE, BODIES OF THE FIVE PERSONS FROM THE SAME FAMILY WHO WERE SLEEPING IN A BED ROOM HAD BEEN REMOVED FROM THE RABBLES OF THE COLLAPSED HOUSE. THEY INCLUDED FOUR SIBLINGS AND A ONE YEAR OLD DAUGHTER OF THE ELDEST SIBLING WHO IS AGED 17, BUT WAS ALSO KILLED. THE FIVE WERE RUSHED TO ESSIKADO HOSPITAL FIRST BUT WERE DECLARED DEAD ON ARRIVAL AND THE BODIES HAVE SINCE BEEN SENT TO THE EFFIA-NKWANTA HOSPITAL MORTUARY. THE SIXTH PERSON IS RECOVERING NOW.”

The NADMO Director narrating how it all occurred said their mud house which is situated on a hillside at Ngyerisia was brought down by the pressure of silt from the hill.

THE WALLS OF THE HOUSE THEY LIVED IN JUST COULDN’T WITHSTAND THE PRESSURE OF SILT THE RAINS BROUGHT DOWN FROM THE HILL, SO THE SIBLINGS WHO WERE ALL IN THE BEDROOM WHICH HAD THE HEAVIEST IMPACT OF COLLAPSE BUT THEIR MOTHER WHO WAS IN THE LIVING SURVIVED.”

Meanwhile, Takoradi has been without light since May 31st evening as a result of torrential rains which lasted all day.

When Citi News, got in touch with the Western Regional PRO of PDS, Benjamin Quarcoo, he said their Takoradi-substation opposite to the Airforce Cemetery has been flooded hence they had to cut power supply.

“THE WHOLE SUBSTATION HAS BEEN FLOODED WHICH IS UNUSUAL AND BECAUSE IT IS DANGEROUS TO BE OPERATIONAL IN SUCH A SITUATION, WE HAVE TO HOLD ON UNTIL THE FLOOD RECEDED. WE ARE ALSO PUMPING THE WATER OUT TO QUICKEN THINGS IN ORDER TO RESTORE POWER.”

When asked whether the unusual flooding of the substation could be as a result of the recent construction of the Takoradi Mall which is just behind it, Mr. Quarcoo said he is unable to tell but the technicians will look into it.

Authorities at the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly and the Regional Coordinating Council are currently touring affected areas.
