Presidency officially confirms the passing of former first lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-RawlingsNana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, a prominent figure in Ghanaian politics and a lifelong supporter of women’s empowerment, was born in Cape Coast on November 17, 1948. First Lady of Ghana from 1979 to 2001, she was the wife of the late former President Jerry John Rawlings. She turned the customarily ceremonial position into a forum for vigorous social and political activism during her tenure.
One of the most significant women’s organisations in Ghanaian history, the 31st December Women’s Movement, was established by her in 1982. With more than two million members across the country, the movement started more than 870 preschools and led initiatives in economic empowerment, healthcare, and literacy. Generations of women were inspired to assume leadership positions in public life by her leadership, which changed the gender discourse in Ghana.

She was more than just the First Lady in her political career. When she ran against then-President John Atta Mills for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential nomination in 2011, she created history. In 2016, she became the first female candidate for Ghana’s presidency after founding the National Democratic Party (NDP).

Mrs Agyeman-Rawlings has continued to be involved in public service since her husband’s death in November 2020. She laid a wreath in honour of the victims of a military helicopter crash in August 2025, the last time she was spotted.

She is survived by her four children, Zanetor, Yaa Asantewaa, Amina and Kimathi Rawlings.
