In Dormaa, Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign trail took a sharp turn when he gave what supporters called “two upper cuts” to Bryan Acheampong and Kennedy Agyapong. President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the audience were apparently shocked by the vehement speech, which has since gone viral on social media.

As a component of Bawumia’s nationwide grassroots campaign, the rally aimed to fortify the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) unity in the run-up to the elections. Though many saw the vice president’s remarks as subtle jabs at two influential people who have openly disagreed with some of his recent policy positions, Ken Agyapong and Bryan Acheampong, he used the platform to make pointed remarks about discipline, loyalty, and the need for respect within the party.

Being a leader is not about making noise or threatening people. To thunderous applause from the audience, Bawumia stated, “It is about sacrifice, humility, and delivery.” Political analysts immediately compared the remark to Bryan Acheampong’s divisive remarks regarding political power and Kennedy Agyapong’s frequent outbursts.

According to party insiders, Bawumia’s remarks were a calculated attempt to establish authority and remind his opponents of the value of supporting the same presidential candidate. One party strategist at the rally stated, “He is sending a message that he is not just the vice president—he is the man in charge.”

President Akufo-Addo seemed momentarily taken aback when Bawumia’s speech took a more assertive tone than anticipated, according to people close to the president. Despite this, the rally concluded with cheers of “Next to Lead, Next to Win!” reverberating throughout the township of Dormaa.

Ahead of the campaign season, a number of high-profile NPP members have been vying for recognition and influence, raising the political stakes within the party in recent weeks. The internal dynamics of the ruling party are now more intriguing due to Dr Bawumia’s audacious strategy in Dormaa, which implies that the vice president is prepared to fight back—and fight hard.
