Mohammed Kudus may have to wait a bit longer to come off the bench after Ghanaian prospect Brian Brobbey scored twice again as Ajax triumphed.
WHAT OCCURED? After claiming Brobbey’s position in the Ajax attack and making it his own by scoring in five straight games, Kudus was benched for the last two games in favor of the 20-year-old forward, who has since responded by scoring four goals.
After Steven Berghuis had given Ajax a 2-0 lead early on, Brobbey scored his second straight hat trick. Kudus received seven minutes off the bench after receiving 15 in the previous weekend’s game, in which he scored the sixth goal in a 7-1 triumph.
The two are passionate rivals, and Brobbey had previously revealed why he had no issue with Kudus taking the field before him in the beginning despite anticipating an extended run in the team after hitting the objective the previous week.
WHAT MENTIONED BROBBEY? “Kudus and I are in a good competition. He does his thing, I do mine. According to Brobbey, “I really think we just improve each other,” as reported by Ajax Showtime.
“I believe Kudus scored in nearly every game, I wouldn’t consider it fair if you score as a striker and the coach substitutes you. I can so appreciate the trainer’s decision. Now, I anticipate playing. I don’t believe you can simply remove a striker after he scored.
THE BIGGER PICTURE: With four goals in two games, coach Alfred Schreuder will find it challenging to bench the center-forward, making it challenging for Kudus to reclaim a spot in the lineup.
The Ghanaian international will be apprehensive of being left out in the cold once more given that he has only been given 23 minutes in the last two games after starting eight of the previous nine, even though it is still too early to draw any conclusions.
Kudus wanted to quit Ajax in the beginning of the season after failing to appear in any of his team’s opening six games, but he rebounded by scoring six goals in five games when given the chance.
However, Nigerian defender Calvin Bassey, who started at left back once more for Ajax, which won, has no reason to be concerned. With the victory, Ajax increased their lead at the top of the league to four points.
Bassey, who has now completed all 90 minutes of play in 13 consecutive games, appears to have gained the coach’s trust after making four tackles, one block, and an interception while winning four of his six ground battles.
WHAT WILL AJAX DO NEXT? Following his spectacular goal against the Reds last month, Kudus will want to start Wednesday’s Champions League match at home against Liverpool, while Bassey aims for a 14th straight 90-minute outing.
