The Ghana Police Service has taken down a criminal group that was responsible for a string of armed robberies that targeted rural banks in five different districts. It has retrieved 14 weapons, including AK-47 rifles taken from dead police officers, and arrested 10 (10) individuals.

At the National Police Headquarters on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, Dr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, the Inspector-General of Police, confirmed the arrests during a news conference.He disclosed that police had to locate hideouts across the Ahafo, Western, Central, Eastern, and Ashanti areas during the six-month operation, which ran from April to September and was based on intelligence collection and surveillance.
From April 10 at the Adansi Rural Bank in Fomena until September 14 at the St. Martin de Porres Cooperative Credit Union in Atonsu Monaco, the gang is suspected of carrying out eleven (11) significant attacks. They usually hit early in the morning, taking guards hostage, confiscating their firearms, and breaking into vaults using cutting machines.The arrest of gang leader Kwasi Egyir, also known as Cobra, in his hideout in Esereso Adagya on September 18 marked a significant development. They found two AK-47 weapons hidden in a pond. Cobra subsequently revealed 14 accomplices, which resulted in additional arrests around the Ashanti Region.https://flyfmghana.com/attorney-requests-eoco-to-bring-charges-against/Three AK-47 rifles, seven pump-action weapons, four handguns, six cars, four motorcycles, GH¢18,845 in cash, foreign currencies, cell phones, and jewellery were among the items found. Police also connected the group to Corporal Francis Adu Yaw’s murder on the Bibiani-Goaso highway in 2024.

Two suspects are still at large, while three (3) were slain in run-ins with the law. There is an ongoing quest for the fugitives, Kwabena Owusu-Ansah, popularly known as Kobi, and another man named Nana Albert.In the battle against violent crime, especially the recent wave of robberies against rural banking institutions, the Police Service has hailed the syndicate’s dissolution as a significant victory. To determine the entire extent of the gang’s operations, investigations continue.
