Otumfuo Advises Queen Mothers

The revered monarch of the great Ashanti Kingdom, Otumfuor Osei Tutu II has sounded a word of caution to some Queen Mothers in the Ashanti, Brong Ahafo and other regions in the Ashanti Region to refrain from any act that would compromise their (the chiefs) powers otherwise there could be dire consequences.

Otumfuor said it has come to his notice that some of the Queen Mothers have formed numerous associations and meeting with government functionaries in Accra in a bid to get more ‘powers’.

He said such actions will only bring problems between them since the role of a Queen mother is to advise the chief and not to compete with them.

Addressing the Asanteman council at the Manhyia palace Monday, the King warned he will not allow any act of disrespect from queen mothers in his jurisdiction.

“ These days I have noticed some of the queen mothers are rising up and forming associations. Those from Ashanti, Brong Ahafo and others and they quickly rush to Accra and other places with their associations, be careful that is not how it is supposed to be. Let me be clear with you, wherever you go in government, nothing could be done unless they come to me first. I’m monitoring.

“You queen mother are to sit behind and beside your chiefs. You are to advice us, that is how it is planned. If we do something wrong you take us home and advice us, that is where you talk to us. Our power as men is even with you women. You are to advice us, not to overtake us. The queen mother role is not meant for fashion and taking nice pictures,” Otumfuo warned.
