A heavily armed NAiMOS Task Force arrived at the community early on Monday, October 5, 2025, and began tearing down improvised shanties that had long been used as havens for drug traffickers, gamblers, and illicit miners. A quick and well-planned operation resulted in the burning of dozens of wooden buildings and mining machinery, filling the air with thick clouds of smoke.

Hundreds of locals who were suspected of participating in galamsey and other illegal enterprises readily turned themselves in to the Task Force after the raid rocked the town.

Officers also discovered packages of hard drugs during the exercise, including 11 wraps of Indian hemp, highlighting the close connections between illicit mining and drug trafficking in the region.

According to sources, NAiMOS agents harshly warned miners and criminal gangs to leave the area in June 2025, following a previous operation. Despite these warnings and repeated requests from traditional authorities, including the Chiefs of Aboso, illicit mining operations had continued unchecked until last week’s forceful action.

In a similar incident, NAiMOS expanded its activities to the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipality’s Dadwen-Dompim section, where three Chanfangs, a generator, and fifteen water-pumping devices were confiscated and destroyed. The area also saw the burning of a number of other illicit mining installations.

NAiMOS has reinforced its commitment to eradicating illicit mining operations, recovering degraded lands, and re-establishing social and environmental order throughout the Western Region with this most recent strike.
