According to Nana Yaw Sarpong, the Deputy General Secretary of the United Party (UP), the Great Transformational Plan (GTP) of the UP included President Mahama’s proposal to convert prisons into agricultural hubs.

He said the project was part of the ideas of Alan Kyerematen, the party’s founder, which were incorporated into the GTP before the 2024 general elections.

Speaking on Thursday, November 6, 2025, on the Angel Morning Show (AMS), Mr Sarpong said he was thrilled about President Mahama’s impending announcement to change the nation’s prison facilities beyond just providing punishment.

He revealed to Saddick Adams on Angel TV, “I was really excited when I heard about the initiative because it was incorporated into our great transformational plan.”

He added that the initiative came about because Mr Kyerematen had asked why inmates do not grow their own food for consumption.

“Alan questioned why inmates could not cultivate their own food and sell their produce from the same plantation while he was writing the Great Transformational Plan,” he recalled.

Mr Sarpong also voiced his concern about the long overdue nature of such a good initiative following successive governments, pointing out that prison facilities employ a variety of professionals whose skills could be utilised.

“There are professors, judges, doctors, nurses, lecturers, and a lot of potential in prisons; why do we not take advantage of that?”

Insinuating that inmates also possess vocational skills, he praised President Mahama for the initiative and suggested constructing small industrial factories within prison catchment communities to increase their productivity even more.
