Lands and Natural Resources Minister, Hon.Kwaku Asomah-Cheremeh has toured the Fure River Forest Reserve

 

est Reserve in the Western Region following reports of illegal mining activities that has devastated about 80 hectors of the 15,823 hectors of Reserve.

Illegal mining activities were detected in the reserve about a decade ago in a small scale. However, in 2015/2016 the introduction of excavators at the site escalated posing a danger to forest officers made to guard the Reserve.

In early 2018, contracts were awarded for Reclamation of the mine out areas in the Fure Forest Reserve but the companies abused the contract and had their contract terminated.

The Minister, Hon. Kwaku Asomah-Cheremeh at a meeting with the community members explained the new mining law and how punitive it is for those who breach it, adding that offenders will face a maximum sentence of 25years and a minimum of 15years.
