Coach Bashiru Hayford steers Somalia to historic victory over Zimbabwe in World Cup qualifying

Ghanaian coach Bashiru Hayford guided lowest ranked African side Somalia to a historic 1-0 victory over Zimbabwe on Thursday in the 2022 World Cup qualifier.

The victory was Somalia’s first in a qualifying game since they defeated Kenya in Africa Cup of Nations qualifying in 1984, their first-ever in a World Cup qualifying campaign, and their first win of any kind since January 2009.

The match was played in Djibouti as Somalia is still not hosting international matches because of the instability.

A late Anwar Sid Ali goal handed the Ocean Stars a narrow advantage ahead of the return match in Harare on Tuesday.
