After Members of Parliament (MPs) rejected François Bayrou’s proposed budget, his administration collapsed, and Lecornu’s brief reign came after that. After Michel Barnier was fired in December 2024, Bayrou was appointed himself.

Lecornu resigned a day after announcing his new government, which kept the majority of the ministers from Bayrou’s administration, the BBC reported. Parties from all political stripes threatened to reject the lineup, which drew harsh condemnation in the National Assembly.

According to French media, President Emmanuel Macron is not going to make a public comment right away, which raises questions about what he would do next to break the impasse.
Political unrest in France began in July 2024 when Macron called for early parliamentary elections in an attempt to gain a definite majority following his party’s crushing defeat in the elections for the European Parliament. But the result of the vote was a hung parliament, with sharply opposed ideological blocs that were hesitant to work together.Since then, opposition leaders have stepped up calls for early elections and Macron’s resignation. Marine Le Pen, the head of the far-right National Rally (RN), stated that holding elections is the only prudent course of action at this time. We have had enough of the joke. The French have had enough. The nation is in a really challenging situation because of Macron,” she continued.

During his New Year’s speech, President Emmanuel Macron stated that the French government “can do better and must do better”.The president now has three choices: resign, disband the National Assembly once more, or name a new prime minister. The last one seems the least plausible. Once thought to be Macron’s most devoted ally, Lecornu was seen as his last trump card. As France prepares for more uncertainty, Macron suddenly has few political alternatives due to his resignation.

In less than two years, Lecornu—a former minister of the armed forces—became France’s fifth prime minister.
