After Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, called for a boycott of the streaming giant Netflix, the company’s stock value plummeted and discussions about its content selections resurfaced.

The resurrected animated series “Dead End: Paranormal Park”, which includes a teenage transgender character, is the source of the issue. Conservative bloggers have criticised the show, which was discontinued in 2023 after two seasons, for allegedly pushing a “woke agenda”.

Citing the need to “protect children’s well-being”, Musk exacerbated the criticism on X (previously Twitter) by declaring that he had cancelled his own Netflix subscription and encouraging others to follow suit. His post went viral very fast, igniting the #CancelNetflix movement that caused a stir on Wall Street.

In less than two days, Netflix’s stock fell 4.3%, wiping off over $15 billion in market capitalisation, according to WION. In only one week, the streaming behemoth saw its biggest stock decline since April, falling by about 5%.

When right-wing websites like Libs of TikTok re-released video from the cancelled performance, the situation became more heated, and Musk said the content was “not ok”. Later, attention shifted to the programme’s creator, openly gay Hamish Steele. Musk also emphasised Steele’s previous remarks on social media regarding conservative activist Charlie Kirk, which drew more criticism.

Musk’s participation rekindled long-standing conflicts about ideological and cultural differences in entertainment. The billionaire has frequently voiced his opposition to what he refers to as the “awake mind virus”, especially when it comes to issues of gender identity, citing the experiences of his own family.

Regarding Musk’s boycott and the criticism of Steele, Netflix has not yet released an official statement.

This most recent episode highlights Netflix’s continuous battle to strike a balance between viewer sensitivity and creative independence. The business has previously been involved in similar scandals, most notably in 2020 when claims of child exploitation in the movie “Cuties” led to international censure.
